ことわざ・故事の類はパラフレーズを作るのに適しています。

 

ことわざの短いフレーズに中には筆者の万感の思いが込められており、聞く側はそれを個々の観点から解釈することが出来ますから。

 

ことわざに込められた思いを自分なりに解釈して自分の言葉でアウトプットする訳です。解釈の仕方はひとつでもそれを言葉で表現する方法は何十何百通りと考えつくはずです。

 

ことわざを英訳する場合など、何となく上手い言葉でまとめたくなりますが、そんな気持ちはグッと抑えてください。拙い表現でも自分の考えを確実に英文にするのが第一。

 

上手い言いまわしを考えてしまうと言葉が出なくなります。

 

特に英語の場合は。

 

 

パラフレーズ課題　「塞翁が馬」

 

「塞翁が馬（さいおうがうま）」は中国の故事です。

 

ある老人の息子が駿馬を見つけて拾ってくる。しかし、馬に乗っているときに足にケガを負ってしまう。後日、息子の元へ徴兵令が届くがケガを負っていたため戦争に行かずに済んだ。

 

老人は近所の人々に語ります。

 

「幸運が良い結果を生むとは限らない。災いが悪い結果を生むとも限らない」

 

というお話。

 

「人間万事塞翁が馬」なんて使い方をします。同じような意味のことわざに「禍福はあざなえる縄のごとし」というのがありますね。

 

塞翁とは老人の名前。直訳すると「老人の馬 The old person’s horse」または「Saiou’s horse」となりますが、それだけでは意味不明です。

 

どういう教訓を含んでいるのかをパラフレーズしてください。

 

例：
The Saiou’s horse means that ～

 

(01) Good luck may not produce good result. Bad luck may not cause bad result.
(02) Good luck may produce bad result. Bad luck may cause good result.

 

(03) You shouldn’t be too disappointed for bad result.

(10) There will be a good luck in the worst situation.
(11) Good result may come after the bad result.
(12) Bad result may come after the good result.

 

(13) There is no guarantee that good luck will continue.
(14) There is possibility that bad luck will continue.
(15) Your success won’t be continuing.
(16) Dawn is sure to come after the night.

 

(17) Good luck may include ill luck.
(18) We can change ill luck into good luck.

 

(19) Good and ill luck are next-door neighbors.
(20) Good and ill luck are closely interwoven.
